The Dalai Lama is recovering in New Delhi after undergoing successful surgery on his left knee, according to his longtime personal physician.
Dr. Tsetan D. Sadutshang said the 90-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader had left post-operative recovery and returned to his hospital room. The procedure followed a total replacement of the Dalai Lama’s right knee in New York in 2024.
The Dalai Lama traveled from his home in Dharamsala to New Delhi after his office announced that he would receive treatment. Supporters gathered to see him off, while Tibetan and Buddhist communities organized prayer ceremonies for his recovery in Ladakh, Dharamsala, New Delhi, Gangtok and Mundgod.
Members of the Ladakh Buddhist Association said women in several villages began chanting mantras early in the morning. His physician thanked staff at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital and conveyed an update to Tibetans and devotees inside Tibet and around the world.
The Dalai Lama is expected to turn 91 on July 6. His office has said he plans to travel to Ladakh later in June for an extended visit, subject to his recovery and medical advice.
